Postcards, it seems like a word from the past. When was the last time you were on a trip, bought a postcard, wrote on it in the tiny space allotted for your thoughts, and actually found a place that would mail it for you? I remember doing just that in my early days of traveling and as well, how exciting it was to receive a postcard in the mailbox, from some far off land.
Times have certainly changed and we can now get pictures from anyone, anywhere, in an instant by way of our Smart phone cameras and videos through email and text. Wonderful, YES, but it does not replace that feeling of opening up the mailbox and getting a surprise. In all of my journeys—whether I am experiencing far away travel tours to Italy, Paris, or Spain, or one of my intimate, cozy cooking vacations to more discreet locations—I always see vendors selling postcards. They are always laid out neatly, bright and colorful, glossy and so picturesque… of the place I am at. An urge inside of me always makes me feel like one of those postcards was meant for me. But most often, I will simply look at them, touch and feel, and then walk away to my next adventure leaving them there for some other hopeful traveler.
I have many more culinary adventures coming up on the horizon, and I’ve promised myself I would buy one of those postcards, fill it out completely, find a place to mail it, and do just that. My grandson is the perfect recipient. Young, impressionable, eager to touch and feel and see anything that is new, colorful and exciting. He can see where I am, learn to read from my thoughts, and visually see what the world has to offer. It is my goal to begin sending him a postcard from wherever I go. From cooking vacations with Mamma Agata on the Amalfi Coast, and culinary adventures in Singapore, to travel tours to Italy and some of the most beautiful and far away places on our globe, I want him to feel like these treasured gems are close and that I’m near and safe.
It also got me thinking about what I wanted to name my official travel and vacation blog. I thought this would be a perfect title for my posts. I want my postcards of adventure to show my experiences, for you to enjoy from the past and future, far and wide. They will contain pictures, experiences, thoughts, my favorite culinary treats and recipes, and so much more. All the essential ingredients for a great postcard!
So stay tuned and let’s see where we go next.
